Runner etiquette 101

This weekend’s 5K Fitness Classic represents the start of the spring running season in Louisville. And whether it’s your first race or your 50th, it’s important to remember that you’re not the only one out there trying to reach your goals. Here are some tips to keep in mind to be respectful and supportive of your fellow runners.

  • Say “hi” to your fellow runners. Or at least wave, or give a head nod. We’re all out there working hard together, so support each other and be friendly.

  • Don’t take more than one of each item after a race. Race directors often plan enough post-race goodies for each person to have one. By taking more than one, you’re potentially denying that item for someone who finishes after you.

  • Don’t walk/run more than two people wide. Race courses with lots of participants can be kind of narrow, so don’t run so wide that people can’t run past your group.

  • If you’re wearing headphones, keep the volume low enough where you can hear someone come up behind you and/or hear vehicular traffic.

  • Don’t litter. When you’re finished with your trash at an aid station, try to get it in the trash cans beyond the station. But if you miss the trash can, it’s okay. Volunteers will sweep it up. But don’t throw your cup far off into the grass, and don’t toss your trash on the ground in the finish area. Try your best to keep litter to a minimum.

This list is just the beginning. What are some of your favorite race-day runner etiquette tips? Share them with us so we can all have a happy, successful spring racing season.
